AJHA Definition of Journalism History

For purposes of written research papers and publications, the term "journalism history" shall be seen as a continuous process, emphasizing but not necessarily confined to subjects of American mass communications. It should be viewed not in the context of perception of the current decade, but as part of a unique, significant, and time-conditioned past.

History in the Curriculum Committee

Originally a task force, the committee's initial intent was (1) to determine which schools offer what courses in journalism/mass communication history and (2) to explore ways (a) to encourage more schools to offer history and (b) to encourage schools to attach greater importance to history at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Most of the work of the task force was (1) surveying schools and (2) developing proposals.
The AJHA thanks David Sloan and Jim McPherson for co-chairing this important work.
