January 1998: Recipient, Aubrey Keith Lucas Summer Research Award. I was one of a dozen USM teachers who received this award to further my research.

1996-present: Secretary-treasurer, Southeast Journalism Conference, an organization of 40 Southeastern college journalism departments in five states. On behalf of USM, I have attended every SEJC meeting since 1991. I accompanied USM students to SEJC meetings in Monroe, La., in 1994 and Atlanta, Ga., in 1995 while on a leave of absence.
Member, Forum Planning Committee, 1995-present.
Member, Founding Board, Mississippi Freedom of Information Center, 1998-present.
Co-founder, Southern Mississippi Scholastic Journalism Association, April 1993. SMSJA was organized to offer an annual journalism conference and contest to high school students in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. The organization serves as both a public service organization and a recruiting tool for the USM Journalism Department. I co-organized the convention in 1993 and 1994 and have coordinated all planning for it since 1997. I have presented workshops and served as host for the convention in all four years of its existence. Since 1995 I have presented occasional one-day seminars for visiting high school students.
1991-92: President, Southeast Journalism Conference. I was responsible for organizing the 1992 SEJC convention, which attracted 135 college students and advisers for a three-day meeting.

1991-1993: Internship coordinator, USM Journalism Department. Secured internships for all sequences in journalism and oversaw for-credit internships.
