LEADING AND FOLLOWING

  • There is always a leader and a follower.
  • The man is the leader and the woman is the follower.

LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS

  • Do not squeeze your partner's hand with your thumb or fingers.
  • Don't clench each other’s hands.  Make a “C” shape with your hands and maintain that “C” shape.
  • Keep your fingers together; do not dig your fingers into your partner.
  • Avoid looking down. Watch your partner.
  • Maintain good frame.  Your arms are like taught springs or a taught rubberband.
  • Use the muscles in your arms to create tension and compression.
  • Take lessons from a professional instructor.
  • Always match your partner.  Adapt to your partner and make corrections so the two of you match.
  • Always dance at the level of the more beginner dancer.
  • Advanced dancers should not make more novice dancers feel insufficient.
  • Remember... social dancing is for fun.

LEADERS

  • Lead by moving your body, not just your arms.
  • Signal turns with palm or fingertip contact.
  • Do not push the follower around.
  • Lead with two hands when possible and appropriate.
  • Adapt the complexity of your dance difficulty to make your partner comfortable.

FOLLOWERS

  • Follow the leader's weight changes.
  • Wait for the leader to move before you do. Do not anticipate and move without a lead.
  • The leader leads your position, but you get yourself there.
  • You go when and where his body goes.
  • Support your own weight at all times.

LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS

  • Do not squeeze your partner's hand with your thumb
  • The follower neither starts nor stops on her own.
  • The leader signals the motion of his body to the follower.
  • The follower feels and watches for direction

DANCE TIPS

1) Imagine flash lights on the tips of your shoes. The flash lights should not sway left to right. The lights should go straight forward just like you are walking. Avoid swinging your feet left to right as you dance.

2) Remain upright while dancing; do not slouch. Imagine getting a suntan where a necklace would fall on your neck. This allows you to have good posture and avoid slouching.

3) Tension. Tension. Tension. Create tension between the couple dancing. Your arms should feel light a tight rubber band versus a loose spaghetti noodle.
