Outreach

Dr. Gearba is dedicated to the goal of motivating underrepresented groups to pursue careers in science and engineering.

Carrie Walker, an Honors College student, performed research in Dr. Gearba’s laboratory for two years. Dr. Gearba secured funding twice for Carrie Walker Carrie to participate in the prestigious Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) at Gaithersburg, MD. Carrie performed her research under the supervision of Dr. William D. Phillips, 1997 Nobel Laureate for Laser Cooling and Trapping.

Drew Walters, a high school physics teacher currently pursuing a M.S. in physics at USM, performed research under Dr. Gearba’s supervision. He also brought his students to visit Dr. Gearba’s laboratory.

Dr. Gearba is an active member of the Women and Science and Engineering (WISE) at USM. WISE is a student organization whose mission is to attract, develop, retain and advance women students in the pursuit of education and careers in science and engineering through formal and informal mentoring opportunities, workshops, and seminar series.

Dr. Gearba gave a series of lectures at the 2006 COSM summer undergraduate school at Hampton University. COSM is a Physics Frontier Center funded by NSF designed to increase the participation in science of students attending black colleges and universities.
