I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and take my allegiance to the Pittsburgh Steelers very seriously. I am a graduate of the University of Michigan and I take that allegiance only slightly less seriously. I like to travel, cook, and have been learning to garden through the undying efforts of my wife, Barbara. Other interests include Bruce Springsteen music, exercise, and raising our two daughters.

I am currently debating the very serious philosophical question of whether I can abandon my home baseball team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. I attended at least one Pirates game every summer from 1975 to 2004, but I am tired of an ownership group uninterested in winning. So I am wondering what kind of American I would be if I just divorced the Pirates. I am not sure whether I’d “audition” a new team or just root for the game itself. I’d welcome any thoughts on the matter.

I am interested in military history and the interactions of war and society since 1789 very broadly understood. Most of my current publishing projects involve the First World War and its impacts on France, Britain, and the United States in comparative perspective. My current book project is a four-way analysis of the Second Battle of the Marne. I am an active member of both the Society for Military History and the European-based International Society for First World War Studies.
