ALVIN A. HOLDER, Ph.D., MRSC, CChemAssistant Professor in ChemistryProfessor Alvin A. Holder received his B.S. in Special Chemistry from The University of the West Indies (U.W.I.), Mona Campus, Jamaica in 1989, followed by his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry, with Prof. Tara P. Dasgupta as his advisor, from The Department of Chemistry, U.W.I., Mona Campus, Jamaica in 1994. He was on faculty in The Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at U.W.I., Cave Hill Campus, Barbados effectively from 1994-2003. During that period, he spent several summers with Prof. A. Geoffrey Sykes in The Department of Chemistry at Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., carrying out research on the chemistry of incomplete and cuboidal clusters of molybdenum and purple acid phosphatase. He was a postdoctoral fellow at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (the late Dr. Edward I. Stiefel, 1996-1997), Virginia Tech (Prof. Karen J. Brewer, 2002-2003), Ohio State University (Prof. Peng George Wang, 2003-2004), and Colorado State University (Prof. Debbie C. Crans, 2004-2006). On August 21, 2006, he happily joined the faculty in The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Southern Mississippi. His research revolves around biological and inorganic chemistry, bioinorganic and inorganic reaction mechanisms.
